Gas work in Ringwood splits neatly by build era: whether the ducted heater sits in an internal cupboard or outside on a slab, and whether the street is on natural gas or LPG.

Ringwood sits at the outer edge of what we cover, 45 to 62 minutes from the Pakenham workshop. That makes it a booked-install suburb for us rather than a same-day one, and it is worth knowing which of those you actually need before you ring anybody.

Mid-century weatherboard and brick veneer through the older streets, a lot of it on blocks big enough to have been subdivided since, plus a wall of newer apartments and townhouses that went up around Eastland and the station. What we get asked for out this way is mostly heat pump hot water replacing original electric and gas storage tanks in the older homes, and Mitsubishi Electric ducted retrofits where a 1970s house has been renovated but never had its heating touched.

The older streets between Ringwood Lake and Heathmont, the Eastland and station precinct apartments and townhouses, and the post-war pockets running toward Ringwood East.

On a like-for-like ducted replacement, that means the existing cavity, ductwork and controller wiring usually all get reused and the house is warm again the same day. Anything over ten years old gets a carbon monoxide test whether or not it is being replaced, and that part is not optional.

We are not going to tell you we are a Ringwood local, because you can see where Pakenham is. What we will tell you is what the drive actually changes and what it doesn't. A booked install does not care how far the van came: we arrive at the time we said, do the job, and the six-year workmanship warranty is the same one every other customer gets. A 2 am no-hot-water emergency is a different question, and for that you want someone closer. We would rather say that plainly than take the booking and let you find out.

What we see go wrong in Ringwood

• The older weatherboards through the middle of Ringwood have limited roof space, so ducted is not always on the table and a multi-head split ends up being the better answer
• Original electric storage tanks in the post-war housing stock are the single best VEU rebate candidates there are, and a lot of them are still sitting there
• The apartments and townhouses around Eastland come with body corporate rules about where an outdoor unit can go, which decides all-in-one versus split heat pump before anything technical does
• Renovated 70s homes very often have a new kitchen and an original heater. The heat exchanger does not know the house was updated
