Backwash filters

A sediment filter that cleans itself. Instead of a cartridge you replace, the mesh is flushed backwards to waste, either by hand or automatically. Sediment only — it does nothing for taste, chlorine or hardness.

The right answer where sediment load is high enough that cartridges would be a nuisance — bore water, tank water, or a property on the end of an old main. On clean Melbourne mains a cartridge system is usually cheaper and does more.

Twin cartridge systems (whole house)

Two cartridges in series on the incoming main — sediment first, carbon second. This is the standard whole-house setup and the one most Melbourne homes actually want, because chlorine taste and smell is the thing people notice.

House and Rain versions use different cartridges for different water. Jumbo 20" flows better and lasts longer between changes than 10" — worth the difference on a family home.

Water softeners

Ion exchange, swapping the calcium and magnesium that cause scale for sodium. Hardness only — it will not change taste, smell or clarity, and on Melbourne mains you probably do not need one.

Bewamat runs a hygiene disinfection of the resin on every regeneration, has an adjustable blending valve so you can dial in how soft you actually want it, and is rated IP44 so it can live outside. 25A holds 8 L of resin, 75A holds 21 L.

Undersink inline filter kits

1 year parts and labour, 3 years parts

A single cartridge under the sink feeding a dedicated tap. Finer than anything a whole-house housing can practically run, which is why it reaches lead and cysts that the bigger systems do not.

Kits come complete — cartridge, filter head, bracket, stainless braided hose, dual check valve and the bush. 0.5 micron is the finest and 5 micron the longest-lasting; most kitchens are best on 1.0.

Reverse osmosis

The only thing on this page that removes dissolved salts, PFAS and pharmaceuticals. A membrane fine enough to reject almost everything, which also makes it slow, wasteful of water, and overkill for most Melbourne households.

Genuinely warranted where there is a measured contaminant a cartridge cannot reach. Not warranted because a website frightened you about tap water. It sends several litres to drain for every litre it makes, and it strips minerals as well as contaminants.

Which water filter removes the most?

Reverse osmosis, by a distance — it's the only thing on this page that reaches dissolved salts, PFAS and pharmaceuticals. That doesn't make it the right choice. It's slow, it sends several litres to drain for every litre it makes, it strips minerals along with contaminants, and it only feeds one tap. Most households are better served by a whole-house twin system and an under-sink cartridge.

What removes PFAS from drinking water?

Of the systems we fit, reverse osmosis is the one rated for PFAS and PFOA. Standard sediment and carbon cartridges are not, and we won't tell you otherwise. If PFAS is your actual concern, start by finding out whether it's present in your supply — for most Melbourne mains connections it isn't a live issue.

Do I need whole house and under sink?

Plenty of people run both, and they do different jobs. Whole house handles sediment and chlorine everywhere — shower, washing machine, hot water system. Under sink runs a finer cartridge on the water you actually drink, which is how it reaches lead and cysts. If budget only stretches to one, tell us the symptom and we'll tell you which one addresses it.

What's the difference between BWT and Puretec?

Both are quality ranges and both come through Reece, which is where we get nearly everything. We've standardised on Puretec for most residential work. BWT is the range with a published capability matrix, and on softeners and backwash filters it's the stronger product. We'll quote whichever suits your water and tell you why.

Are these Reece codes I can order myself?

They're the TRS codes, so yes, they're real. We've published them because we'd rather you could check our pricing against the trade catalogue than take it on faith. Bear in mind filtration ties into your potable supply, which brings backflow protection into it — it's licensed plumbing work, not a weekend job.
