Bonaire fault code E02

Water level fault (evap).

Needs attentionBook someone. It won't fix itself and it usually gets worse.

What E02 actually means

Water level fault. The unit cannot get the reservoir to the level it wants, either because water is not coming in or because the float is not reading correctly.

What causes it

  1. Water inlet solenoid blocked or failed
  2. Float valve stuck, often with scale or sediment
  3. Water supply restricted or turned off
  4. Reservoir draining faster than it fills, which means a leak or a stuck dump valve
  5. Sediment build-up after a season without a clean

Most likely first. That order is from what we actually find on site, not from the manual.

Safe to check yourself

No tools, no covers off, nothing to do with gas, refrigerant or wiring.

  • Check the water isolation tap to the unit is fully open
  • Check other taps in the house run at normal pressure

What we check on site

So you know what you’re paying for.

  • Inlet solenoid operation and strainer
  • Float valve inspection and clean
  • Dump valve operation
  • Reservoir clean and sediment removal
  • Fill and drain cycle test

Can you keep using it?

It will run and it will not cool properly. No safety issue, but running an evap with the pads only partly wet puts uneven load on the pads and shortens their life.

What the fix usually involves

Usually a clean: reservoir, float and strainer. This is the job a pre-summer service does before it becomes a call-out in February.

Is it worth fixing?

That depends almost entirely on how old the unit is. Past about ten years on hot water and gas heating, and twelve on aircon, a significant repair usually costs more per remaining year than a replacement does — and it’s the same point at which the VEU rebate is worth the most, because old inefficient appliances are exactly what the scheme pays to remove. If yours is young and the fault is a component, we’ll fix it and say so.
