Brivis fault code h01 31

Flame roll-out during ignition (auto restart).

Needs attentionBook someone. It won't fix itself and it usually gets worse.

What h01 31 actually means

Flame roll-out was detected during the ignition sequence, and the heater will try to restart itself. The auto-restart is why people often see this one clear on its own and then come back a week later.

What causes it

  1. Partial flue restriction that only shows up on a cold start
  2. Burner needing a clean
  3. Ignition sequence running rough, often gas pressure
  4. Early-stage heat exchanger cracking

Most likely first. That order is from what we actually find on site, not from the manual.

Safe to check yourself

No tools, no covers off, nothing to do with gas, refrigerant or wiring.

  • Note how often it happens, and whether it is only on the first start of the day
  • Do not keep resetting it to get through the night

What we check on site

So you know what you’re paying for.

  • Flue inspection
  • Combustion analysis and carbon monoxide test on the running appliance
  • Gas pressure test
  • Burner clean and ignition sequence check

Can you keep using it?

Not comfortably. It auto-restarts, which makes it feel minor, but the underlying cause is the same family as h01 44. Get it looked at before the next cold snap rather than during it.

What the fix usually involves

Usually a burner clean and a flue check. If combustion testing shows the heat exchanger has gone, that is a replacement conversation.

Is it worth fixing?

That depends almost entirely on how old the unit is. Past about ten years on hot water and gas heating, and twelve on aircon, a significant repair usually costs more per remaining year than a replacement does — and it’s the same point at which the VEU rebate is worth the most, because old inefficient appliances are exactly what the scheme pays to remove. If yours is young and the fault is a component, we’ll fix it and say so.
