Flame lost during heating cycle.
What h01 49 actually means
The flame lit correctly and then went out partway through the heating cycle. That is a different problem from failing to light, and it usually points at gas supply or combustion air rather than at the igniter.
What causes it
- Gas pressure dropping under load, often when the hot water or the cooktop fires at the same time
- Gas line undersized for everything now connected to it
- Flame sense rod dirty, so the heater loses sight of a flame that is still burning
- Combustion air restriction
- Flue partially blocked
Most likely first. That order is from what we actually find on site, not from the manual.
Safe to check yourself
No tools, no covers off, nothing to do with gas, refrigerant or wiring.
- Note whether it drops out when another gas appliance kicks in, which is a genuinely useful clue to give us
- Check the return-air filter and open all vents, since airflow affects combustion too

Can you keep using it?
Once or twice, on a cold night, it is not dangerous. Regularly, no. A flame that keeps dropping out means gas is entering the chamber and stopping, repeatedly, which is not how a heater is supposed to work.
What the fix usually involves
Often gas pressure or line sizing rather than the heater itself, which is why the diagnosis matters more than the part. Where the line was undersized from the original build, upgrading it fixes the hot water and the cooktop at the same time.
Is it worth fixing?
That depends almost entirely on how old the unit is. Past about ten years on hot water and gas heating, and twelve on aircon, a significant repair usually costs more per remaining year than a replacement does — and it’s the same point at which the VEU rebate is worth the most, because old inefficient appliances are exactly what the scheme pays to remove.
