Brivis fault code h01 50
Ignition lockout, max ignition attempts exceeded.
What h01 50 actually means
Ignition lockout. The heater has made its maximum number of attempts to light, failed each time, and shut itself down properly rather than keep trying. It will not restart on its own.
What causes it
- Everything that causes h01 46, carried through to a lockout
- Igniter worn out, which is the single most common cause on a heater over eight years old
- Flame sense rod dirty enough that the heater never sees the flame it made
- Gas valve failing to open
- Gas pressure too low, especially on cold nights when demand across the street is high
Most likely first. That order is from what we actually find on site, not from the manual.
Safe to check yourself
No tools, no covers off, nothing to do with gas, refrigerant or wiring.
- Check the gas isolation valve at the heater is open
- Check other gas appliances still work
- Reset the controller once. If it locks out again, leave it and book it

- Gas valve operation and coil resistance
- Full ignition sequence observed end to end
Can you keep using it?
Nothing to keep running, and repeated resets are the wrong move. A lockout is the heater deciding it has tried enough times, and overriding that judgement all evening is not a good idea on a gas appliance.
What the fix usually involves
Igniter and flame rod, most of the time. Both are stocked parts and it is a one-visit job. Where it is the gas valve it is still a same-visit part on most Brivis units, because Rinnai keep the pipeline open on old models.
Is it worth fixing?
That depends almost entirely on how old the unit is. Past about ten years on hot water and gas heating, and twelve on aircon, a significant repair usually costs more per remaining year than a replacement does — and it’s the same point at which the VEU rebate is worth the most, because old inefficient appliances are exactly what the scheme pays to remove.
