Roof-mounted, runs on water and a fan rather than refrigerant. Cheap to run and moves a lot of air, which suits the drier inland suburbs. Needs windows cracked to work, and it struggles on humid days.

How it looks

That is the entire visual argument for a multi-head. Four separate splits means four condensers along the side of the house and four sets of holes through the wall; a multi means one larger condenser and one set of penetrations, with the pipework fanned out from there.

The saving on a multi-head shows up again at service time: one outdoor unit to clean rather than four. The indoor heads still each need doing, which is why the bundle rate exists — there is no sense charging a full call-out per head when we are already standing in the house.

How the job runs

What happens on a multi-head air conditioning install.

    Room-by-room walk-through

    Every room that's getting a head, plus how you actually live in the house — which rooms run together, which are used at night. That decides the outdoor unit size more than floor area does.

  2. 2

    Outdoor unit position, first

    A multi outdoor unit is bigger and heavier than a single, and everything runs back to it. Where it can legally and sensibly sit sets the pipe routes for the whole job, so we settle it before anything else.

  3. 3

    Fixed price, per head and total

    You see what each head costs and what the outdoor unit costs, so if the fifth bedroom can wait a year you can make that call with real numbers.

  4. 4

    Day one, pipe runs

    The bulk of a multi install is pipework. Runs get set out, cored and insulated, usually with the outdoor unit set and the heads bracketed by the end of the day.

  5. 5

    Day two, heads and commissioning

    Indoor units hung, connections made, whole system pulled into vacuum as one, charged and commissioned. Every head tested individually and then together.

  6. 6

    Handover, one remote at a time

    Each head has its own controller and they're easy to mix up. We label them, run through each one with you, and email the compliance paperwork the next business day.

Three and five-head configurations sit between and above these. Combined line-set length is the number that moves the price most on a multi, so it's worth measuring properly at the quote.

How many rooms can one outdoor unit run?

Mitsubishi's MXZ range goes from 2 up to 6 ports. Beyond about five heads, ducted usually works out better on both price and comfort.

Can each room have its own temperature?

Yes, each head has its own remote and its own setpoint. They do share a compressor, so extreme differences between rooms are less efficient than similar ones.

Do all the heads have to be the same?

No. You can run a wall unit in the bedrooms, a floor console in a room with no wall height, and a bulkhead unit where you want it hidden, all off the one outdoor.
