Roof-mounted, runs on water and a fan rather than refrigerant. Cheap to run and moves a lot of air, which suits the drier inland suburbs. Needs windows cracked to work, and it struggles on humid days.

How it looks

You see the vents. That's it.

The whole point of ducted is that there is nothing on the wall. The indoor unit lives in the roof, the ducts run through the cavity, and what you see in each room is a vent in the ceiling and a controller by the hallway. Outside there is one condenser, usually on a slab down the side.

A ducted indoor unit sits in a roof cavity for fifteen years, and the single thing that decides whether servicing it is an hour or a quote is whether somebody left a path to it. We put ours on a platform with clear access. Not everyone does, and we have crawled far enough to have opinions about it.

How the job runs

What happens on a ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning install.

  1. 1

    Roof space check, before anything else

    How much clearance there is, where the indoor unit can sit, whether we can get duct runs to the far bedrooms. On some houses this conversation ends with us recommending multi-head instead, and that's a better outcome than finding out on install day.

  2. 2

    Heat load and zone plan

    Room by room, with orientation, glazing and ceiling height in it. You get a zone layout drawn up and the reasoning behind the grouping before you commit to anything.

  3. 3

    Fixed price with the zoning in it

    Zones are quoted as part of the system, not as an upsell after you've signed. If the budget only stretches to four zones today we'll design the system so more can be added later.

  4. 4

    Day one, indoor unit and trunk duct

    Indoor unit set and hung in the roof, main trunk duct run, outdoor condenser positioned and set. The heavy part of the job.

  5. 5

    Day two, branches, outlets and zone motors

    Branch runs to each outlet, ceiling grilles cut in and fitted square, zone motors installed and wired back to the controller.

  6. 6

    Commission, balance and set the zones up

    Airflow balanced across the outlets so the far bedroom gets what it's supposed to. Controller programmed, each zone tested, and we walk you through the schedule so it's running your way before we leave.

Additional zones, longer duct runs and difficult roof access are the three variables. A double-storey with a second system upstairs is a different quote again, and we'll price both options if that's the honest answer.

Can ducted go into an existing house?

Usually, if there's roof access and enough clearance for the indoor unit and the trunk duct. We check that on the site visit before quoting. It's the one thing that genuinely rules the job out.

How many zones do I need?

Four covers most homes: bedrooms, living, kitchen/meals and a spare. We fit Zonemate as standard so adding a zone later doesn't mean pulling the ceiling apart.

Is ducted more expensive to run than splits?

Zoned properly, no. Unzoned it can be, because you're conditioning the whole house to serve one room, which is exactly why we don't install it unzoned.
