An all-in-one is a single unit: tank below, compressor in a shroud on top. It goes back on the slab the old electric or gas tank came off, which is why it is the simplest swap there is. It is taller than what it replaces, and that is the one thing worth checking before the day.

A heat pump doesn’t burn anything or run an element — it moves heat that’s already in the air into your tank, which is why it does the same job on a fraction of the power.

    Pull heat from the air

    A fan draws air across the evaporator, where the refrigerant soaks up the warmth — even a cold morning has heat to give.

    Concentrate it

    The compressor squeezes that refrigerant, and squeezing it makes it hot — hotter than shower temperature.

    Pass it to the water

    The heat exchanger hands the heat to the water. Cold in the bottom, hot out the top.

There is less to an all-in-one than to a split, and that cuts both ways: fewer things to go wrong, and one shell to replace when the tank eventually does. The anode rule is the same as anywhere else, and it is still the thing most owners have never heard of.

How the job runs

What happens on a all-in-one heat pump hot water install.

    One spot to check

    An all-in-one goes where the old tank was, provided there is air around it. That's the whole siting question, which is why these are the simpler job.

    Size on the household

    180–200 L for one or two, 270–285 L for three or four. Five or more and we'll point you at a split instead of selling you an undersized one.

    Rebate worked out at the quote

    On a straight electric-storage swap the VEU figure is at its largest, and on an iStore it takes the biggest bite out of the install of anything we fit.

    Old unit out, new one in

    Drained, disconnected and to a metal recycler the same visit. New tempering valve holding the outlets at 50 °C.

    Electrical checked

    Most swaps run off the existing circuit. Where they don't, that's on the quote before we start rather than a surprise on the day.

    Timer set before we go

    Cheap tariff, or the middle of the day if you have solar. Tested with you rather than left on the default.

All three are inc GST, after the VEU rebate for a Victorian owner-occupier at current VEEC prices. One thing that can add to them: if there is no power point within two metres of the existing system, the unit needs a circuit run to it and that is $350. We check on the site visit and it goes on the written quote, never onto the invoice afterwards. Reclaim ECO and Thermann ECO are the same platform — what differs is supply, not spec.

Is an all-in-one worse than a split?

Not worse, different. A split performs better in the cold and gives you the tank options; an all-in-one is simpler, cheaper and only needs one spot. If your old tank's position is the only place a unit can go, the all-in-one is the right system and the split isn't an option at all.

Reclaim ECO or Thermann ECO — which one?

They are the same tank and heat-pump platform with different badges on them. Identical guts. Pick on brand preference or on which one Reece has in stock, and don't let anyone tell you one out-specs the other.

Why is iStore cheaper?

It's a more basic unit, and it takes the VEU rebate further than anything else we fit — which is what makes the installed number so low. It's the right call when the rebate is what decides the job. It won't hold output on a cold morning the way a CO₂ split will.

Is R290 propane safe?

Yes. The charge is small, it's sealed in the unit, and it's outside. R290 is used in heat pumps across Europe and it's where the industry is going, because the synthetic refrigerants it replaces have global-warming potentials in the hundreds.

What size do I need?

180–200 L for one or two people, 270–285 L for three or four. Five or more and you're better off on a split with a bigger tank and a faster recovery rate — we'll tell you that rather than sell you an undersized all-in-one.

How long does it take?

Three to five hours for a straight swap in the same spot, and usually the same day. If it's moving position or needs an electrical circuit run, that's a longer job and it's on the quote before we start.
